  Indy’s Story

I’ve been wanting to add a Boston to my family for a long time – for years. I have a Boxer boy, and so decided that our Boston should be a female and I wanted to get her through Rescue, since I’ve been involved with Rescue for a number of breeds over the past few years and really believe in it. The problem was that we didn’t really have many dogs that needed rescue assistance in Alberta (what a happy problem to have). I’d been on the rescue volunteer roster for a while and hadn’t been called on much. Then, the happy day came that I got a note looking for a foster home for a senior female who was being surrendered by her owner – I think I took about 4 seconds before replying enthusiastically “Yes, I will take her!” Never mind the fact that I had my boxer, plus a greyhound foster at the time and was about to go on a vacation. As soon as I got back, my grey got adopted, and so off I went to pick up Indy. She has the loveliest silver face and the spunkiest attitude – you’d never guess this dog was 12 years old, as we had been told.

From day one in my house she fit in as if she belonged there – none of the usual warming-up period you normally see with a foster. As the days and weeks went by, I felt pretty sure she was going to stay with me forever – how could I put a 12-year-old through another re-homing? Her final test was to see how she was with kids – I have none of my own right now, but as a female in my late 20’s I have to consider that it might happen sometime. So I took her home to visit my family over Christmas, and planned to see how she behaved with my niece and nephew – already about 99% in love with her, and really hoping she’d be good! She passed her test with flying colours, made my whole family fall in love with her (even my allergic sister), and so I decided that Indy would be getting a forever home for Christmas! Adoption papers filled out, I then started digging into her history and tracked her back to her original breeder, who gave me the delightful news that Indy is in fact only 10 years old! So of course I’m thrilled, and I now feel like I’ve just been given two extra years with my special little girl. She is truly an angel, and while I say I gave her a new home for Christmas, really it was me who got a wonderful gift when Indy came into my life.
