  EMMA - A Rescue Story

Emma - 6 year old spayed female Boston Terrier

Emma was transferred into the BTCC Rescue Program from the Furbaby Rescue Organization in Blaine, Washington on April 24, 2003. Emma originally came from the Skagit Valley Humane Society where she was considered unadoptable due to her medical problems. The Furbaby Organization pulled Emma from the dangers of the shelter and transferred her into the loving arms of BTCC Rescue the same day. We send our most sincere thanks to Eleni Naslund and her wonderful Furbaby Organization for allowing us to assist this special boston terrier. The BTCC Rescue Program joins Emma in sending the Furbaby gang big boston terrier kisses for all of their help!

Poor Emma was grossly overweight at 26 pounds and had been a victim of poor nutrition for most of her life. She was in bad need of some dental work and had a corneal ulcer in her left eye that had been left untreated. She also suffered from gastro-intestinal problems brought on by the poor quality dog food she had eaten for most of her life. Beneath all of her medical problems, I saw a little dog that desperately wanted to be loved and taken care of.

Emma settled into her new foster home quietly and graciously, indeed, she brought tears to my eyes as she settled on the comfy dog couch for the first time. Her grateful eyes said it all, and I made a silent promise to her that life would be much better for her now that she was in our care.
Emma immediately began an exercise and weight reduction program which included a new diet off high quality dog food and three brisk walks a day. How my neighbors chuckled when they saw me walking poor Emma down the street, huffing and puffing for all she was worth! The good food and exercise worked wonders for her health. Her coat started becoming shiny and lustrous, her eyes bright and happy, and her bright and vibrant spirit started to shine through her sadness.

It was a long and painful road for Emma's medical recovery. She had to lose some weight before she could have her dental surgery. When it came time to treat her badly infected teeth we were shocked to learn that 12 of her teeth had to be pulled due to severe infection. She was also treated for the corneal ulcer, a urinary tract infection, and was checked for mange. Emma was tattooed and microchipped, dewormed, and began a flea preventative program. All of her shots were brought up to date. The BTCC Rescue Program would like to thank the wonderful doctors and staff at the Huff Animal Hospital for taking such good care of Emma while she was on the road to recovery. She flourished under their loving care!

Emma has now fully recovered from her medical problems and I am happy to report that the corneal ulcer appears to have completely healed and that Emma is eating sensibly and well. Emma is feeling fine and frisky for possibly the first time in her life. She radiates good health and happiness and is now a svelte 18 pounds!

Emma was adopted into her wonderful new home on May 10, 2003 and her new family tells us that she is everything that they had ever wanted in a companion, and more. They adore and cherish her. Emma will now be living a happy and carefree life with her new family.

Emma was only with me for a short time, but she has left an indelible pawprint on my heart. She is a very special and sweet boston terrier who got a new lease on life thanks to the BTCC Rescue Program. Thank you to all of the BTCC members for helping to fund and support Emma's rescue.
