  Buster’s Story

Spring 2004 Update: Sadly, Buster is no longer with us. He passed away peacefully and surrounded by love from his dedicated owner. Ann gave Buster the most wonderful years of his life, and he gave her all of his love in return. All of us at BTCC Rescue would like to thank Ann for loving Buster as much as we did and for giving him such a beautiful life in his senior years. We will miss you Buster.

Buster’s story begins 9 years ago when he was purchased as a puppy by a family living in the southern United States. Sadly, Buster was not to have a happy beginning to his life. He was chained to a doghouse and left outside for many years. Buster’s family eventually moved to Anchorage, Alaska and it was there that Buster learned how to break free of his confinement and stroll down the streets of Anchorage, exposed to the many dangers of city life. Who knows what prompted Buster to continually run away from his family? Was he looking for a second chance? A place where he could receive love and comfort? Buster was often picked up and impounded by the local SPCA and his family would always come and claim him, only to put him back on the chain and leave him in isolation in the back yard.

When Buster was last impounded by the Anchorage SPCA his family was contacted and they informed the SPCA that they were no longer interested in having Buster as their pet and they surrendered him to the shelter.

Poor Buster sat in that animal shelter for 3 months without anyone showing any interest in adopting him. Who would want a sad looking senior boston who had seen better days? The future was not looking bright for poor Buster.

This is when the Boston Terrier Club of Canada stepped in to assist this unfortunate dog. I was made aware of Buster’s plight and attempted to contact local boston breeders and experienced boston owners in Alaska.  No one was available to help him. Meanwhile, Buster was slowly fading away in the Anchorage SPCA, losing weight at a rapid rate due to the stress of living in an animal shelter environment. Something had to be done to save him.  The Anchorage SPCA put out a heartfelt plea to American and Canadian rescue groups to help this spunky old fellow who had charmed the Anchorage SPCA staff with his gentle and forgiving nature. They did not receive any quick responses from any American rescue groups and as time was of the essence, the BTCC Rescue Representative contacted the Anchorage SPCA offering assistance. We would help get him to Canada and the best news of all: we had found a permanent home for Buster! Arrangements were made between the Anchorage SPCA and the BTCC. Emails flew fast and furious and finally….Buster flew to Vancouver in mid May and into the loving arms of his new owner, Ann.  A happy ending for an old dog that had never known any kindness until now!

I’m happy to report that Buster is doing beautifully in his new home. He lives with an experienced boston owner and has a boston “sibling” named Benjy to keep him company. Ann has informed me that Buster is now completely housetrained and that he is gaining weight rapidly.  He loves spending time curled up on the couch with his new Mom and he has developed lovely house manners. Who says you can’t train an old dog?

Without the BTCC, Buster would have been yet another statistic, another dog dying a needless death in an animal shelter.  Our club made a big difference in the life of one dog; we gave him a second chance at happiness. Buster is now living the life he always should have been, and for that each of us can feel thankful that we played a small role in helping him find happiness.

The goal of the BTCC rescue program is to help every boston terrier live a life of happiness, comfort, and love. I join Buster in thanking each and every BTCC member for helping to save his life.
